Gum Recession Treatment in Maspeth, Queens
Refined cosmetic dentistry designed to improve smile harmony, confidence, and natural-looking aesthetics.
Gum recession is the gradual exposure of root surfaces as the gum tissue pulls back from the teeth — and it’s one of the most common (and most overlooked) sources of cosmetic concern, tooth sensitivity, and long-term tooth loss in adults. At SOL Dental Arts in Maspeth, Queens, gum recession is evaluated and treated by Columbia University-trained dentists Dr. Arthur Volker, DDS and Dr. Aadel Soleymani, DDS, with a focus on identifying the underlying cause first and then choosing the right treatment for your specific case.
Why Gum Recession Matters
Healthy gums frame the teeth at a consistent height and protect the underlying root surface from the bacteria, acids, and abrasion of normal mouth function. When gums recede, three things change: the smile starts to look longer or uneven; exposed root surfaces become highly sensitive to cold, sweet, and brushing pressure; and the root surface (which is much softer than enamel) becomes vulnerable to decay and progressive bone loss. Untreated, advanced recession can ultimately lead to tooth loss.
Common Causes of Gum Recession
Recession is almost never random — it has identifiable causes that need to be addressed alongside any cosmetic treatment, or the recession will simply continue. Common causes include aggressive brushing (especially with a hard-bristled brush or aggressive technique), undiagnosed clenching and grinding (which puts lateral force on teeth and damages the gum margin), periodontal disease, traumatic occlusion (a bite issue where forces are concentrated incorrectly), naturally thin gum biotype, and certain anatomical factors such as high muscle attachments pulling on the gum.
How We Evaluate Recession
Every gum recession case starts with identifying the cause. We evaluate your brushing technique and toothbrush selection; we check for signs of grinding and clenching (worn enamel, scalloped tongue, masseter tension); we measure the recession at every site using periodontal probing; we analyze your bite for traumatic forces; and we evaluate the underlying gum biotype to understand how much risk of further recession you face. Treatment is only effective if the cause is identified first.
Treatment Options
Conservative management. For mild, stable recession with no functional or cosmetic concern: improved brushing technique, soft toothbrush, sensitivity-focused toothpaste, custom night guard if grinding is contributing.
Composite bonding for root coverage. A conservative cosmetic option — tooth-colored composite can be sculpted to mask exposed root surfaces and reduce sensitivity without surgery, ideal for selected cases.
Gum graft surgery (referral). For more advanced cases — especially when there’s significant cosmetic concern, ongoing sensitivity, or risk of further bone loss — we coordinate gum graft surgery with trusted periodontists who specialize in this work. Modern graft techniques are far less invasive than they used to be and can restore the gum to its original position around the affected teeth.
Orthodontic adjustment. Some recession is best treated by correcting underlying tooth position with Invisalign or other systems before any tissue-level treatment.
Preventing Future Recession
Even after treatment, prevention matters. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush with gentle pressure (we can demonstrate the right technique); wear a custom night guard if grinding is a factor; come in for regular professional cleanings; address any bite issues that concentrate forces on specific teeth; and treat early signs of gum inflammation before they progress.

What Cosmetic Dentistry Can Improve?
Cosmetic dentistry may be used to address a wide range of aesthetic concerns, including chipped teeth, worn edges, uneven tooth shape, discoloration, spacing, small lateral incisors, asymmetry, and smiles that no longer feel as polished or youthful as they once did. In many cases, improvement is achieved through conservative treatment planning that enhances the smile while respecting natural anatomy.
Our Approach to Smile Enhancement
At SOL Dental Arts, cosmetic treatment is planned with attention to proportion, translucency, contour, smile line, and facial harmony. We evaluate not only how the teeth look individually, but how they work together within the smile as a whole. This allows us to recommend treatment that feels elegant, refined, and appropriate for the individual patient rather than generic or overdone.
Treatment Options That May Be Included
Depending on the case, cosmetic dentistry may involve composite bonding, veneers, whitening, selective contouring, replacement of failing bonding, or a more comprehensive smile refinement plan. Some patients benefit from a small enhancement to one or two teeth, while others may be candidates for a broader treatment approach designed to improve the overall balance of the smile.
